For my 20% project, I explored social media in the classroom and the positivity and negativity it brings to its users. From this project, I learned that social media is depicted positively or negatively depending on how the professors and students utilize the platform. Social media can be a distraction but also a great way to collaborate. Social media can have inappropriate content but can be a great way to share resources. With all pros and cons of this platform, it is important to detail the way in which your professor and fellow students utilize social media. After gathering these findings, I made sure to detail how my professors as well as my peers' professors utilize social media in the classroom. The primary ways professors use social media are discussion, resources, and to keep in touch with students. With these tactics of social media in the classroom, I was led to believe that the way students use these techniques and their profiles are the importance in collaboration. I came to the conclusion that social media is a benefit for the classroom as long as you use and utilize the platform positively and effectively. I came to this conclusion from testimonies, the interview for blog post six, and my research on the subject. You can see these points in the newsletter below.
My final product was a twitter account and a newsletter to highlight the key facts, pros and cons, and importance of social media in the classroom. I chose these resources because my target audience, undergraduate college students between the ages of 18-24, is the most active age group on social media via mobile devices such as laptops and cell phones. A flyer with color, links, pictures, and video will give them the outlets in which they find comfort. The flyer resembles a blog and young adults blog, read blogs, and use social media every day of their lives. With the data I received from my research and experience, I also made a Twitter account. The majority of my target audience are already on social media and with Twitter being one of the most actively used social media platforms, I decided to make a Twitter account for students to follow to allow them to view sites, blogs, and pictures that can help them better understand the positives of effectively using social media. The difficulties I found on my project was deciphering between professors' uses of social media in the classroom. Different professors use social media in different ways and this was a big portion of my project in order to decipher if social media really was a beneficial platform for students. To overcome this difficulty, I made sure to ask my peers about all the ways they have used social media in their professors' classrooms. I made sure to ask questions about different subjects to ensure different professors. With the interview I conducted, I was able to get great information that is useful for my audience.
After researching this subject and completing my 20% project, I am very interested in the detail and aspects of social media for educational and business purposes. I hope that next semester someone else takes the opportunity to study this subject deeper and take the question a step further. Studying businesses on social media and how they use these platforms to gather information on potential employees would be a great topic to further the discussion.
